Unique surgery successfully accomplished in Kerala hospital

61-year-old women have been implanted with an artificial heart at the VPS Lakeshore Hospital

For the first time in Kerala, doctors in the VPS Lakeshore Hospital successfully implanted an artificial heart to a 61-year-old female patient.
It surgery took 9 hours to get completed and was the first such case to be provided at a private hospital.
The patient has been undergoing treatment for Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) for the past 6 years and was admitted to the hospital following a cardiogenic shock accompanied by breathing difficulty and hypotension on September 13.

The authorities of the hospital published a release where it was mentioned that the left ventricular assist device (LVAD) was an extremely rare and complex procedure and needed the presence of an expert team.

It was also added that a few centres in India are doing it at present. 
LVAD is a unique and advanced mechanism that is designed to assist and provide support to those patients who are suffering from heart failure.
This machine can be said to be a mechanical pump that helps the bottom left chamber of the heart (or the left ventricle) to pump out blood to the aorta and the rest of the body.
