Tripura's prime referral hospital performs open hearth surgery

An achievement of Cardio-Thoracic and Vascular Surgery and Interventional Radiology unit

The doctors of Agartala Government Medical College and GBP hospital, the prime referral health facility in Tripura, have achieved another milestone in delivering healthcare to the people. This time, they successfully performed Open Heart Surgery. It's an achievement of Cardio-Thoracic and Vascular Surgery and Interventional Radiology (CTVS-IR) of the state's prime referral hospital.
46-year-old Madhabi Rani Das, a resident of Udaipur in Gomati district, had visited the OPD of the hospital with a breathing problem. After necessary medical examinations, the attending doctors identified a major atrial defect in the patient's heart.
Finally, a team of doctors led by Dr Kanak Narayan Bhattacharjee, in charge of the CTVS-IR department, performed the critical surgery on Thursday last "they took five hours.
According to an official release, the Open Heart Surgery was performed in the hospital for the first time after the formation of the CTVS and IR departments. The surgery was done free of cost under the Ayushman Bharat scheme.

Dr Bhattacharjee in a press conference highlighted the technical sides of the surgery and said the patient was stable.
"In such a surgery, we open the heart and temporarily place its functions to a heart-lung machine. As soon as the defects are fixed, we close the heart and transfer the load from the machine to the patient's the heart," Dr. Bhattacharjee said.
The Open Heart Surgery was performed in the hospital for the first time after the formation of the CTVS and IR departments.
Principal of AGMC- Dr. Manjushri Roy said the hospital is reaching new heights with new achievements day by day.
"Our goal is to take the hospital to a place where the people will get all kind of medical facilities and they will not require to go outside for treatment," Dr. Roy told the media.
The team included Anaesthesiologist Dr. Surajit Paul, Medical Officer Dr. Abhishek Debbarma, Perfusionist Sujan Sahu, Physician Assistant Sudipta Mandal, Scrub Nurse Zahir Hossain, Arpita Sarkar, Sourav Shil, Mousumi Debnath, OT assistant Ratan Mandal, Jaydip Chakraborty, Amrit Murasingh, Coordinator Abhishek Dutta, Richashree Sarkar, Kisan Roy and others.
Medical Superintendent of GB hospital- Dr. Sanjib Debbarma and Deputy MS Dr. Sankar Chakraborty also attended the press conference and hailed the success.

The hospital authority thanked Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb and Union Minister of State- Pratima Bhowmik for their role in introducing the new department.
Meanwhile, dedicated efforts of the doctors and the other medical staff working in the hospital have made various critical surgeries like hip replacement and open heart surgery possible over the past two-three years and set a new benchmark in the state's healthcare.
The change that came following appointment of expert doctors and installation of modern equipment in recent years is now visible in the health service of the GBP hospital, an official commented.
