After total Hip Replacement, Open Heart Surgery and Heart Bypass Surgery, now the doctors of Tripura have successfully performed total Knee Replacement surgery. This time, Tripura Medical College (TMC) and Dr BRAM Teaching Hospital has achieved the milestone on Friday.
A team of local doctors led by Dr. Rajib Debnath successfully performed the surgery on a 64-year-old male patient who was suffering from chronic arthritis for the last 10 years. The surgery was assisted by Dr. Pradyot Basak. The team also included Anaesthetist Dr Rimjhim Chakma.
Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb hailed the achievement and congratulated the team of Tripura Medical College.
Meanwhile, Agartala Government Medical College and GBP Hospital, the prime referral health facility of the state, is continuing to script success in heart care. The team of GBP Hospital led by Dr. Kanak Narayan Bhattacharjee recently conducted an Open Heart Surgery on a minor girl.
Dr. Bhattacharjee had conducted the state's first Open Heart Surgery at the GBP hospital in January last-- the credit goes to the Cardio Thoracic and Vascular Surgery and Interventional Radiology (CTVS and IR) department.
The girl, daughter of a farmer, is a student of Class VIII. Since her tender age, the girl was feeling breathing problem after brisk running and physical activities. Her father, despite his poor financial condition had tried to take her to Bengaluru for treatment but he was unable to manage the funds.
The girl finally visited the CTVS and IR department of the GBP Hospital recently. After a thorough examination, Dr. Kanak Narayan Bhattacharjee observed there is no wall between the left ventricle and right ventricle of the patient's heart. As a result, both the purified and non-purified blood were mixing up which prevented her from brisk activities.

A team led by Dr Bhattacharjee conducted a five-hour-long Open Heart Surgery recently.
The 12-member medical team included anesthesiologist Dr Surajit Pal, Perfusionist (person responsible for operating a heart-lung machine) Sujan Sahu and other medical staff. According to official sources, the girl is now doing well and her health condition is stable.
The successful surgeries in the GBP hospital and Tripura Medii College have come as a big boon for the patients of the state.
Meanwhile, along with other medical services, the team of Cardio-Thoracic and Vascular Surgery and Interventional Radiology (CTVS and IR) department has performed various critical surgeries over the last few months. The CTVS and IR department started its journey on July 13 last year.
According to an official report, the department registered 105 Cath Lab tests including 69 angiograms, 19 Parmcath, 7 angioplasties, four temporary pacemaker replacements, six permanent pacemaker replacements in the month of February itself. The number of Cath Lab tests in the hospital was 144 till January last.
An official release said, Dr. Arup Deb and Dr. Anindya Sundar Trivedi joined the department recently and it would benefit the people to a great extent.
At present, here are 10-bedded wards for men and women separately and an ICU having 10 beds. A cardiac OT also started functioning where the Open Heart and Heart Bypass Surgeries were successfully conducted.
