Rising cases of divorces during the lockdown and its effects on mental health

The lockdown of 2020 was very hard for everyone. Most of us are aware of the covid deaths during this phase but apart from that, there was another issue which increases during this period.

The period of lockdown has been very difficult for everyone in one or the other way. Many people even faced hardship after losing their jobs.
It was even tough for those who lost their near and dear ones due to Covid-19.
Along with the issues relating to lockdown, during the Covid-19 induced lockdown period divorce cases were also on the rise in Assam.
Data available from the Family Court in Guwahati revealed that there is an alarming rise in the number of divorce cases in the state.  A total of 622 divorces took place during the period from the month of March 2020 to December 2020.
This number of divorce cases was several times more as compared to in 2019.
It may be mentioned that the nationwide lockdown was imposed from March 25, 2020.
There were a number of reasons behind divorce cases. The most common was an extra-marital affair, which gave way to domestic violence. Excessive drinking habits and abuse(physical and mental) were also reasons behind the divorces.
The couples who came for divorce, go through counseling sessions but very few couples agree to stay together with mutual understanding.
As per the information of family court authorities, the child is the worst victim of their parent's divorce as they wish to stay with both of them and suffer emotionally and mentally.
Dr Bhaskar Sharma Neog, a psychiatrist based out in Guwahati, said that the process of divorce was not something that happens over the night. It happens over a period of time when problems start between the couples.
In some situations, most people go through a feeling of hopelessness and has a tendency to finish their lives. In order to avoid such feelings, one should always keep on repeating some positive affirmations and keep faith in the self.
In due course of time, most of the couples almost make their minds that if they can or want to stay with their partners or not. They prepare their minds with the course of time.

After getting married, it is extremely natural that the two people in the relationship of a husband and a wife are dependent on each other for one or the other reason.
So some mental issues are natural to arise as they lose their partner.
Whenever the family members of a girl become aware that she is returning home after the divorce, it is the responsibility of her family members to make her happy and be considerate towards her.
At that time, the family members must give her full emotional support and try to keep her busy in the works which she loves to do. This will prevent bad thoughts and unnecessary concerns from coming to her mind.
In cases if the husband remarries other women after their divorce or if the wife does the vice-versa, there may be a concern that what if their child is misbehaved by their new step-parents.
In some situations, most people go through a feeling of hopelessness and have a tendency to finish their lives. In order to avoid such feelings, one should always keep on repeating some positive affirmations and keep faith in the self.
Dr. Neog said that the issues of the mind are also related to the pathology and if symptoms of depression are seen, blood tests are conducted to see its effects on the body.
In case if the couple had a child, then both the husband and wife should maintain a soothing or friendly relation even after marriage so that the child does not feel neglected or left out.
The child must never be given the feeling that one of his parents loves him than the other one. It should be kept in mind that the bitterness of the relationship between the spouse should not affect the child mentally.
