Relief Riders: a unique initiative

With a wise intention to help people, a group of cyclists have clubbed together to do something great. This story has the detail.

To protect the environment and establish cycling as a mode of recreation, The Guwahati Cycling Community was formed a couple of years ago.

On 17th May this year, this particular community formed a group called "Relief Riders" under the aegis of the Guwahati Cycling Community.

This particular community aimed to help the ones who are Covid patients, ailing people, senior citizen and those in distress. They distribute essential items, including food and medicines, among the people.

Arshel Akhtar, one of the pioneers of this wise initiative, said that their members on wheels were delivering prepared food, medicines, vegetables, fruits, groceries and other essentials to the needy without charging anything for delivery. Following the Covid protocols, the volunteers also go out for their selfless services during curfew hours even.

The volunteers are between 22 to 59 years of age, delivering within a radius of 3 kilometres from their homes, respectively. Currently, this team has 16 volunteers in Guwahati.

Akhtar said that the Relief Riders mission initiated in Guwahati following the footsteps of Bengaluru, Chennai, Mumbai, Hyderabad and a few other cities.

Another volunteer, Siddharth Bhattaroy, said that the group believes they can save fuel and promote a cleaner environment by encouraging cycles usages.

Gautam Choudhury, the most senior rider member, said that the volunteers' strength is growing daily. They expect more people to join the great mission of helping people who are in need.
