Radiotherapy Block Inaugurated at State Cancer Institute at GMCH

Inauguration of this new department can bring new rays of hope to the cancer patients from the region

A Radio Therapy Block was inaugurated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah at the State Cancer Institute located at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital during his two-day visit to Guwahati and Meghalaya on Sunday.
The Home Minister also inaugurated the newly established state-of-the-art Linear Accelerator machine at the State Cancer Institute. This machine is commonly used as an external radiation treatment for people with cancer. It customizes high energy X-rays or electrons to conform to a tumour's shape and destroy the cancer cells while sparing surrounding normal tissue.

The cancer hospital in the city is equipped with 200 beds and three departments: medical oncology, surgical oncology and radiation therapy.
It was on 17 February 2021 that the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital got equipped with a new radiation oncology block, which was equipped with a Tomo Therapy facility. Tomo Therapy is an advanced treatment used in cancer patients which provides a 4D image of the tumours or the cancerous tissues and those tissues can be treated without damaging the other tissues nearby.
