North Eastern Diabetes Society celebrates World Diabetes Day

A free health and diabetes awareness camp was organised by the North Eastern Diabetes Society

The North Eastern Diabetes Society celebrated World Diabetes Day on Saturday at the Guwahati Press Club. As part of the celebration, a free health check-up camp was organized. At the camp, blood sugar tests were conducted among the Guwahati-based media persons and their family members.
The North Eastern Diabetes Society is a 26-year-old premier organization in Northeast India with national recognition and a reputation for its continuous activities to lessen the burden of diabetes. It is an organization of Doctors and Para Medical personnel. NEDS every year observes WDD with various programmes and activities with a focus on the prevention of diabetes.

Addressing the media, Dr. Santosh Adhikari said that it the year 2006 that the World Health Organization recognized November 13 as World Diabetes Day. Dr. Adhikari added that like every year this year also the WHO has given a theme for the WDD, which is 'Assess to Diabetes Care'. It was added that when we use the word access, it meant regular monitoring of insulin, use of various technologies to monitor the sugar levels in the blood.
One of the central executive members of the association, Dr Rupam Das said that a sound sleep of 8 hours can work miracle in keeping away diabetes.
The vice-president of NEDS, Dr. Sanjib Medhi said that diabetes is a preventable disease and we can keep ourselves away from diabetes. Dr. Medhi added that these days diabetes is a very common disease and has started attacking various people irrespective of their age group but it can be prevented by keeping a strict eye on the diet, changing the sedentary lifestyle to an active one by including more exercise.

One of the central executive members of the association, Dr. Rupam Das said that a sound sleep of 8 hours can work miracle in keeping away diabetes. Along with sleep, diet and exercise also play a very important role.
Dr Das added that a diabetes patient should have a wholesome meal and a balanced diet. It was emphasized that the amount which we consumed should be burnt through exercise.
