The National Medical Commission (NMC) has granted permission to the Department of Anaesthesiology and Orthopedics of Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences (SMIMS) under Sikkim Manipal University (SMU) to commence post-graduate courses from the academic year 2021-22.
With 15 full-time highly trained and experienced faculty members, the Department of Anaesthesiology, SMIMS and Central Referral Hospital (CRH) have been permitted to take 4 MD students. This Department has always been crucial to SMIMS & CRH excellent management of all operation theatres as well as treating of critically-ill patients in ICUs, including accident and emergency services.
It also successfully conducts high quality undergraduate, post-graduate medical training programmes for MBBS, Nursing, Physiotherapy students and Paramedics, where they learn the skills for resuscitation and life support thus making them force multipliers in healthcare. The Head of the Department, Professor (Dr) BK Gandhi said that professional teaching and healthcare are of the highest standard and go hand in hand at SMIMS & CRH.
The Department of Orthopedics, SMIMS & CRH which excels in spinal surgeries, joint replacement and arthroscopy including high-end trauma care with 11 experienced specialists and domain experts, is permitted to take 3 MS students.
The Dean, SMIMS, Dr. Muralidhar V. Pai expressed his hope that NMC would accord approvals to more Departments of SMIMS & CRH to conduct PG courses.With state of the art surgical skills, this department has an incredible success rate of 98 per cent and is among the best performing Departments of SMIMS & CRH in terms of patient outcomes. Professor (Dr) Papa Naik, Head, Department of Orthopedics expressed his gratitude to his team, and the orthopedic unit of STNM hospital for referring patients and supporting SMIMS & CRH.
The Dean, SMIMS, Dr. Muralidhar V. He expressed his hope that NMC would accord approvals to more Departments of SMIMS & CRH to conduct PG courses.
The Vice-Chancellor, Dr. (Veteran Lt. General) Rajan S. Grewal remarked that SMIMS offers Post Graduation (MD/MS/DND) in 12 specialties of which 20 per cent of the allocated seats would be reserved for medical students from Sikkim. The additional PG courses will further fortify the foundations of the pioneering public private partnership with the Government of Sikkim in the best interest of Sikkim, its students and citizens, he said.
