World Environment Day is observed on 5 June every year. This day signifies the day we devote for caring mother nature.
On this auspicious occasion, the National Health Mission, Assam organised a cycling event on 5th June to unitedly celebrate World Bicycle Day (observed on 3rd June every year) and World Environment Day (5 June) to promote the benefits of physical activity and the role of cycling in reducing air pollution. The event was supported by National Medicos Organisation, Assam, DES Sports Activity and WISH Foundation. Around 100 participants joined the rally which was flagged off by Dr. M.S. Lakshmi Priya, IAS, Mission Director, NHM, Assam.

The health benefits of physical activity are well established and includes a lower risk of NCDs including cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes and cancer.
In conversation with Fit Northeast, a senior cyclist expressed his gratitude towards NHM and the other associated organizations for organizing this cycle rally. He added that this practice will help create an awareness among the children of the upcoming generation that through cycling we can make ourselves healthy and prevent the environment from getting polluted. He informed that a number of cycling enthusiasts have a common Whatsapp group, where they got the message regarding the cycle rally and accordingly reported in the NHM office at 5.30 AM, wore the T-shirts which were provided to them, registered for the rally and paddled unitedly for a good cause.
