Nagaland observes World Tuberculosis Day

The day was observed under World Health Organisation (WHO) 2022 theme, "Invest to End TB, Save Lives'

To raise public awareness about the deadly disease and the devastating health, social and economic consequences of it across the globe, Nagaland joined the rest of the world Thursday in observing "World Tuberculosis Day". The day was observed under World Health Organisation (WHO) 2022 theme, "Invest to End TB, Save Lives". The theme aims to convey the urgent need to invest resources to ramp up the fight against TB and achieve the commitments to end TB made by global leaders.
National TB Elimination Programme (NTEP) State TB Cell, Nagaland while observing "World TB Day" at the Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) Platinum Hall, stressed the importance of church and other faith-based organizations to efficiently and effectively disseminate information on TB. While presenting an overview of NTEP, state TB officer (NTEP) Dr TiasunupPongenerappealed for the support and commitment of churches and other faith-based organizations to spread awareness about the disease and help the department in the fight against eliminating TB.
Though WHO has set a target to eliminate TB by 2030, Dr Pongenersaid Prime Minister Narendra Modi has envisaged eliminating TB from India by 2025
At present, Dr Pongenersaid there are 11 district TB centres, 13 TB units and 52 TB treatment centres, two nodal DRTB centres 5 district DRTB centres in the state. He added that investigation and treatment of TB were free of cost in all the government health facilities. Though WHO has set a target to eliminate TB by 2030, Dr Pongenersaid Prime Minister Narendra Modi has envisaged eliminating TB from India by 2025. In order to achieve this target, he said the government of India has initiated various activities such as Active Case Finding, Patient TB Infection strategy, NikshayPoshanYojana, TB free campaign, Private Sector Engagement, Multi sectoral involvement of line department.

National Health Mission, mission director Dr.ThorhusieKaitry also highlighted the need to create awareness about TB and especially requested the stakeholders and media to assist the department. He then encouraged the gathering to take personal responsibility in spreading the message about the disease which would eventually contribute in eliminating the disease.
At the programme, TB champion, MezhiilhoubeilieSorhie shared her success story; the thematic message was delivered by assistant programme officer, ApichetlaAmer; KethoAngami from ARK Foundation spoke on stigma and discrimination among TB patients and a short speech was delivered by NBCC representative. Dimapur, Wokha, Tuensang and Kohima also saw the celebration of World Tuberculosis Day.
