A one rupee coin stuck inside food pipe of a one-year-old baby girl child was successfully removed recently by doctors at the Marwari hospital in Guwahati.
The hospital authority said that a successful emergency extraction of a foreign body in the form of a one rupee coin from the food pipe of a one-year-old baby girl child by fellow ENT surgeon of Marwari Hospitals, Dr Amit Kumar Agarwal along with his Anaesthesia team of doctors, Dr Kaushik Borah and Dr Kartik Basumatary.Image: The surgery team with the baby and the extracted coin.

"A one-year-old female child attended the Emergency Department of Marwari Hospitals at late night hours. The mother gave history that the child accidentally swallowed a one rupee coin while playing. We did an X-Ray check and found in the X-ray report that a coin is indeed in the food pipe of the baby. Baby was in distress, so we decided and arranged for an emergency operation on the same night. I, Dr. Amit Kumar Agarwal, along with two anaesthesia doctors Dr. Kaushik Bora and Dr. Kartik Basumatary. Other OT staff Bhavesh and Suresh also coordinated in the successful removal of the coin," said Dr. Amit Kumar Agarwal in a press statement.
Dr. Agarwal further said, "The baby after the successful removal of the coin, was kept in the observation room of Marwari Hospitals and was observed for the night. The next day in the morning, the baby was discharged after consultation with a pediatric consultant.
