Experts warn about next variant in 6 to 8 months

Dr Jayadevan added world is likely to witness the next Covid wave in the upcoming 6 to 8 months

While the world relaxes after Covid cases decline in numbers, the Co-Chairman of the National IMA Covid Task Force, Dr Rajeev Jayadevan says that the world is likely to witness the next Covid wave in the upcoming 6 to 8 months.
Dr Jayadevan added that even though the Omicron BA.2 variant is more transmissible than the previously identified BA.1 sub-variant, it wouldn't cause any other surge. The senior officials also added that even they were not sure regarding how it typically acts.
He added that for the last two years, it has constantly evolved to increase its fitness, which is its ability to infect more people and to leap past natural immunity and vaccinated immunity
It was mentioned that the variant BA.2 cannot infect those who have previously had BA.1 sub-variant of Covid-19. Laying emphasis on the strain, it was said that the variant BA.2 is not a new virus or strain instead is a sub-lineage of Omicron. Dr Jayadevan said that like Omicron, further variants might show more immunity properties.

A report released in the recent past explained that Omicron showed that even vaccine immunity can be easily surpassed by other variants and this trend might be expected in the future with the other variants too.
