Excelcare Hospitals performs rare Medical Feat and saves life

An expert team of 4 senior doctors from various departments gives a new life to a 72-year-old man

In a rare medical feat, doctors of Guwahati's leading super speciality health care institute - Excelcare Hospitals performed a challenging procedure on a 72-year-old male from Guwahati who was suffering from Carotid Artery Disease.
The procedure was performed by Maj Gen (Dr) Kamal Pathak (Senior Interventional Radiologist) and ably assisted by Dr Amitava Misra and Dr Dhanjit Nath (Interventional Cardiologists).
It may be mentioned that such kind of procedure is rarely performed in the Northeast.

Maj Gen (Dr) Kamal Pathak explained that the patient presented with multiple problems. He said that upon investigation it was found that there was total occlusion of the Right Internal Carotid Artery with ectasia of the Left Common Carotid & Internal Carotid Artery and hence there was Bilateral Anterior Circulation of the brain only from the left side.
Dr Amitava Misra said "The case was very challenging as earlier, the patient had presented with ACS (Acute Coronary Syndrome) with Heart Failure.
 "Patient was treated by Carotid Artery Stenting. Two stents were placed (stent within a stent) which would act as a flow diverter and protect the dilated artery from rupture. The patient made a good recovery and was stable at the time of discharge," he added. 
Dr Amitava Misra said, "The case was very challenging as earlier, the patient had presented with ACS (Acute Coronary Syndrome) with Heart Failure. The patient then underwent a Left Main Coronary Artery Stenting at Excelcare Hospitals which in itself is a challenging procedure. To make things more complex, the patient was suffering from CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease) and was on maintenance dialysis".
Dr Mishra further said that the patient also had a history of repeated Transient Ischemic Attacks (a condition similar to a stroke).
