Dr Bhaba Das Foundation of Guwahati today launched a free heart surgery scheme at the Health City Hospital in the city. The scheme is meant for children belongs to Below Poverty Line families.
Addressing a media gathering, cardiac surgeon, Dr J.P. Kalita said that in India, more than 2 lakh children are born with heart issues. Dr Kalita highlighted that among that 2 lakh, 1 in 4 children suffer from critical congenital heart disease. Due to lack of awareness and further intervention and treatment, 50% of the children die within 1 year of birth. The children who suffer from non-congenital heart disease, if not treated in time, the load on their heart goes on increasing day by day. The surgical intervention of congenital heart disease is technically challenging and involves a lot of resources and expertise. Due to lack of adequate resources, North-East has been able to conduct very few congenital heart disease correction programs. Apart from that, there are some centres which carry out this program.
Present at the press meet, paediatrician Dr Yasin Ali said that when a child suffers from critical congenital heart disease, they start showing symptoms as they tend to become irritated (by nature), they cannot drink the mother milk at a stretch, excessive sweating, they might suffer from repeated chest infections, suffers restricted growth and will turn blue after birth (which implies that the bay has heart issues). In most of cases, every parent brings their child to a paediatrician first-hand. Then after carrying out echocardiography, the issues in the heart are detected and the child is referred to a cardiologist.
The Medical Director of the hospital, Dr B.P. Chakrabarty added, "The purpose of the foundation is to give services to the financially poor people from North-Eastern India".Dr Ali added that the hospital has a very good and expert team of nurses and doctors which make treatment very easy.
