District Government Hospital successfully operates cancerous tumor

This feat is a first in the history of the state and indicates significant developments in the medical sector even at the district levels

A first ever hugely complicated case of parotid cancerous tumor (also entailing a difficult airway) was successfully operated at the Namchi District Hospital of Sikkim, last week. Incidentally, had this operation been conducted at a private hospital then the bills would have run into lakhs. Further because of the financial implications the surgery would probably never have been conducted.
The very fact that this surgery has been successfully concluded indicates the significant developments in the medical sector of Sikkim even at the district levels.
Since the patient had diabetes and high blood pressure, it had been challenging to give anesthesia through the mouth. However, the doctors were successful in creating an alternative airway. The complicated surgery took more than four hours to complete.

"This is a tremendous achievement by the medical team of Namchi District Hospital and we congratulate the entire team for their historic feat," stated the health secretary, P. Bhutia.

Sikkim has four districts, north, south, east and west. Every district has a district hospital where till recently patients were checked and then referred to the STNM Hospital at Sokeythang or CRH Manipal. Both these are hospitals in the capital city of Gangtok. Patients with complications were also often referred to hospitals outside the state.
Chief Minister, PS Golay since his coming to power in 2019 has laid stress on improvising and developing the health sector within the state so that the number of referral cases come down drastically.
