In the present age, most of us are always under pressure due to various issues. Sometimes it may be work-related and sometimes the cause might be something personal.
Sometimes it also happens that we tend to feel low, lonely and helpless and we often use the phrase that "I am feeling depressed", without realizing what the word depression means.
In medical terms, depression can be described as a common and serious medical illness and gives rise to feelings of sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities that one once enjoyed. It can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems and can decrease your ability to function at work and at home.
When one suffers from depression, they can experience loss of interest in socializing, loss of apatite, as a result of which, they might even lose weight. Their sleep might get disturbed and might have guilty feelings for mistakes or things that they have never done. In severe cases of depression, one can even have thought of suicide.
In conversation to Fit Northeast, senior psychiatrist Dr Bhaskar Sarma Neog said that 1 hour of regular exercise or walking in the morning can help heal a person suffering from depression.

It was emphasized that proper sleep and rest also have an important role to play in keeping depression at a bay. Engaging in regular exercise also helps in keeping our mind fresh and helps keep away waste thoughts.
Dr Sarma Neog said that when one suffers from depression, they tend to separate them from others but it is important to stay in connection with other people and share our feelings and thoughts as much as possible.
It was mentioned that there are various stages of depression and there are also various ways to cure it. In the first and mild stage, counseling can help to cure one. Then medication is prescribed depending on the ranges of depression in the patient.
In this context, Dr. Sarma Neog firmly added that treating a case of depression is not only the part of the doctor. It was added that the patient should always remain positive and think about what he has which others do not and try to be encouraged.
A positive contribution of co-operation from the patient can speed up the procedure of treatment. Along with the efforts of the patient, the support of their family members matters a lot. The family members must try to understand the emotional state of the patient and must handle them with utmost care and patience.
