The newly constructed Cardiothoracic and Neuroscience Centre (CNC) under the aegis of Guwahati Medical College and Hospital is all set to open in the second half of April.
This was disclosed by Assam health minister Keshab Mahanta after a review meeting in Dispur on Tuesday.
The review meeting was also attended by the principal secretary (health), commissioner and secretary (health), director (DME), GMCH principal and superintendent GMCH and director (CNC) where the minister took updates on the overall status of the centre.
"Once functional, this super-speciality hospital will cater to patients with heart and nerve diseases. I have urged the GMCH and the CNC authorities to make all the necessary preparations, ahead of its formal inauguration," Mahanta said.
Once operational, the cardiology, neurology, cardiac surgery and neurosurgery departments will be shifted from Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) to the new hospital which is just adjacent to it.Once operational, the cardiology, neurology, cardiac surgery and neurosurgery departments will be shifted from Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) to the new hospital which is just adjacent to it.

During a review of the construction work of the super-speciality hospital in November last year, the chief minister had said that the new hospital must be run in a fully professional manner and all best possible technology should be applied in all spheres of its operation.
Cardiothoracic surgery is the field of medicine involved in the surgical treatment of organs inside the thoracic cavity " generally the treatment of conditions of the heart (heart disease), lungs (lung disease), and other pleural or mediastinal structures.
The functioning of the CNC will also fulfill the need of many critical cardiac and neuro patients who have to go outside the state and region for treatment.
In most countries, cardiothoracic surgery is further subspecialized into cardiac surgery (involving the heart and the great vessels) and thoracic surgery (involving the lungs, oesophagus, thymus, etc.).
