"Beyond Tragic": Omicron claims 500000 lakh lives, says WHO

Since its onset, last November, it has overtaken the Delta varient, which was earlier assumed to be the most powerful.

The World Health Organization recently revealed that the world has witnessed more than 5,00,000 deaths since the onset of the Omicron variant.
Abdi Mahamud, the incident manager at the WHO highlighted that around 130 million coronavirus infections and half a million deaths had been recorded across the globe since the Omicron variant has landed and it is "beyond tragic". It was added that Omicron has been declared as a variant of concern by the World Health Organization.
In a live interaction on WHO's social media channels, the WHO incident manager lamented that with the COVID-19 vaccines being developed and still 500,000 deaths occurring is "really something." .
It was said that since its arrival in November, the Omicron variant has taken over the Delta variant as it is more transmissible, along with having very mild symptoms.

In a live interaction on WHO's social media channels, the WHO incident manager lamented that with the COVID-19 vaccines being developed and still 500,000 deaths occurring is "really something."
WHO's the technical lead on COVID-19, Maria Van Kerkhove underscored that the sheer number of Omicron cases was "astounding". She added that the true number of coronavirus infections and deaths could be much higher than the ones which are known about.
