Assam is all set to get its first Forensic Science Institute. The institute will be established under the Directorate of Forensic Sciences located in Kahilipara of Guwahati.
The classes in the institute will start the next year. Built at a total cost of Rs 4 crore, it is expected that this institute will produce efficient products, which will help to resolve all the criminal cases with a much quicker pace.
As per sources, a proposal has been submitted for the appointment of the Academic Director at the Forensic Science Institute.
By the next year, two new regional forensic labs will also become functional at Silchar and Bongaigaon.
The forensic laboratory in Guwahati, known as The Directorate of Forensic Sciences was established in the year 1967 in Shillong, which was then the capital of undivided Assam.In Silchar, the forensic lab will be set up on the land stretching up to 3000 sq km within the premises of the Silchar Medical College and Hospital. In Bongaigaon, the campus of the lab is spread across 2500 sq km within the police reserve.

The forensic laboratories are associated with various organizations like the administration of criminal justice delivery system, army, BSF, medical colleges, veterinary, revenue intelligence, forest department, Oil India Limited, excise department, ONGC, refinery and many more.
