Assam Health Minister tweets on the occasion of World Cancer Day

It was highlighted that in Assam, screening for Breast cancer and Oral Cancer has been started at all functional Health and Wellness Centre.

February 4 is observed as World Cancer Day all around the globe. On this day extra efforts are made by the people of the medical fraternity to create awareness about cancer. Several seminars and functions are organized on this day.
The Health Minister of Assam, Keshab Mahanta tweeted and said that a united effort by all the people can make the people aware of this fatal disease. He also said that the Government of Assam has taken up various initiatives to help cancer patients in every possible way.
We all are aware of the fact that breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in the present times.

It was highlighted that in Assam, screening for Breast cancer and Oral Cancer has been started at all functional Health and Wellness centres. The screening for Cervical Cancer is being carried out at selected Primary Health Centres.

Some of the warning signs of breast cancer may be the presence of a lump in the breast, bloody discharge from the nipple, change in shape and size of the breast. Breast cancer is more common in women from the urban areas due to various factors like late childbirth, poor breastfeeding habits and some therapies.
In conversation with a senior cancer specialist, Fit Northeast came to know that Oral cancer is extremely common among the people of Northeast because of their habit of having Areca nut and Betel Nut. Along with it, tobacco consumption is also extremely high in the Northeastern states as compared to the other states in India. The excessive intake of beetle nuts cause oral cancer and its early symptoms may be ulcers/patches grown in the mouth, a change in the tone of voice.
Doctors urge the patient to immediately consult the doctors if any of such symptoms are seen and to take sleep for 7-8 hours per day, keep the body weight under control, quit alcohol consumption and smoking and eat a healthy and balanced diet.
